I went into this one unsure… but Firebird Flake from Cornell & Diehl’s Small Batch series delivered in a way I didn’t expect. Built around the bold interplay of sun-cured Orientals and Dark-Fired Kentucky, Firebird places two condimental leaves in the spotlight — a rare and unconventional move. Supporting them are specially aged Red Virginias, bringing natural sweetness and structure to the smoky, savory core. Pressed and sliced into flakes, the smoke reveals layered notes of citrus, wood smoke, green pepper, and a refined, lingering finish. What surprised me most? The sweetness and lightness woven through the complexity — balanced, playful, and enjoyable from start to finish.
